A superb, tiny and rare hooded wall clock with alarmwork, six-inch dial, beautifully made about 1765 by Robert Croome of Wotton under Edge, Gloucestershire, who married in 1762 and died in 1768 aged only about thirty. This is one of only three clocks so far documented as made by him during his very short working life. Both are hooded alarm clocks. This clock is in its original hood, made most unusually of walnut tree. Pictured after cleaning.

An early eighteenth century (1730s) hook-and-spike wall clock with nine-inch dial of the 'zig-zag dial' type (done with 'wrigglework' engraving), distinctive of early Oxfordshire Quaker work and probably made by Thomas Gilkes of Sibford Gower or his son, Richard Gilkes of Adderbury, whose early work followed the Quaker principle of being unsigned to avoid vanity, a sin they fell into later in life. Pictured before restoration an exceptionally rare square dial lantern clock 1680s-90s, unsigned but identifiable by the unique dial design as the work of little-known clockmaker Barnaby Matthews of Aughton, Lancashire, a member of the South Lancashire group of clockmakers, which included James Barton and Henry Webster, being brother-in-law to Richard Barton of Ormskirk. Original anchor escapement. Only one other clock is known by this clockmaker. SOLD.
